When the Mind Won't Stop: The Third Eye Chakra, Sleep, and the Wisdom of the Breath
Sometimes the deepest wisdom arrives after we stop trying to find the answers. 🤍
There are moments when the body is tired, yet the mind continues. The day is over. The house is quiet.
You finally have a chance to rest. Yet your thoughts keep moving.
Planning.
Replaying conversations.
Thinking about tomorrow.
Trying to solve problems that don't need solving at midnight.
Many of us know this feeling well.
We long for rest, but struggle to switch off.
We search for ways to sleep better, calm the mind, and find a sense of peace within ourselves.
From a yogic perspective, this is where the teachings of the Third Eye Chakra, or Ajna Chakra, offer beautiful insight.
What Is the Third Eye Chakra?
Ajna, meaning "to perceive" or "to know," is the sixth chakra and is located between the eyebrows.
It is associated with intuition, inner wisdom, clarity, awareness, and the ability to see beyond surface appearances.
Its colour is indigo, and it is often described as the centre of insight and perception.
When the Third Eye Chakra is balanced, we may experience:
✨ Clarity of thought
✨ Trust in ourselves
✨ Connection to intuition
✨ A sense of perspective
✨ The ability to observe rather than react
When it becomes imbalanced, we may notice:
• Overthinking
• Mental fatigue
• Difficulty switching off
• Self-doubt
• Feeling disconnected from our inner guidance
• Sleep disturbances
In modern life, many of us spend much of our time living in our heads.
Thinking. Planning. Analysing. Trying to find certainty in an uncertain world.
Yet the more we think, the further we often move away from the wisdom that already exists within us.
The Difference Between Thinking and Knowing
One of the gifts of the Third Eye Chakra is helping us understand that there is a difference between thinking and knowing.
Thinking is often loud. It repeats itself. It seeks control. It tries to predict every possible outcome. Knowing is quieter. It arises from a deeper place.
A place that becomes easier to access when we create moments of stillness.
This doesn't mean we stop thinking. It simply means we stop believing every thought.
We learn to observe, to listen, to trust.
The Breath as a Bridge
This is where breathwork becomes such a powerful practice.
The breath offers us a bridge from the busy mind back into the body.
Every conscious breath is an invitation to return to the present moment.
When we slow the breath, we send signals of safety to the nervous system.
The body begins to soften, the mind becomes less reactive, the constant mental chatter starts to lose its intensity, the breath does not force the mind to become quiet.
Instead, it gives us something deeper to pay attention to.
A rhythm, an anchor, a reminder that we are here, now.
What Does This Have to Do With Sleep?
Many people assume sleep is simply about being tired enough.
Yet often the challenge isn't sleep itself.
It's the state of the nervous system.
A body that remains alert, a mind that continues scanning, processing, and preparing.
Sleep becomes difficult when the nervous system hasn't received the message that it is safe to rest.
This is why breathing practices can be so supportive, they help shift us from doing into being.
From alertness into relaxation. From mental activity into embodied awareness.
By calming the nervous system, we create the internal conditions that allow sleep to arise naturally.
Not through force.
But through surrender.
Returning to Inner Wisdom
Perhaps the Third Eye Chakra is not about seeing something extraordinary.
Perhaps it is about seeing ourselves more clearly.
Perhaps intuition isn't something we need to develop.
Perhaps it is something we hear when the noise begins to settle.
When the breath slows. When the body softens. When we stop searching and start listening.
In those moments, clarity often arrives.
Not as a loud answer, but as a quiet knowing.

The Third Eye does not ask us to see more.
