What if the emotion isn't the problem?
The real challenge may not be what you feel, but how quickly you react.
Have you ever said something in the heat of the moment that you later wished you hadn't?
Or replied to a message too quickly...
Lost your patience...
Snapped at someone you love...
Only to think afterwards,
"That isn't how I wanted to respond."
We've all been there.
The truth is, emotions aren't the problem.
They are part of being human.
Imagine someone says something that upsets you.
What happens first?
Is it the reaction?
Or is there something in between?
What lives in that space?
The Natural Reaction
Most of us don't pause. We react.
Not because we're bad people.
But because our nervous system is trying to protect us.
When we feel threatened, frustrated or overwhelmed, our breathing changes before we even realise it.
Our body prepares to defend itself.
And often, our words follow that state.
Imagine a jar filled with water and sand.
Shake it. The water becomes cloudy.
You can't see clearly.
If you continue shaking it, it stays cloudy.
But when you put it down...The water begins to settle.
Not because you forced it. But because you gave it space.
Our emotions can be like this.
We don't always need to fix them.
Sometimes we simply need to stop shaking them.
What if emotional balance isn't about never feeling angry...
But about recognising anger before it becomes your words?
What if it isn't about never feeling anxious...
but learning how to stay present with anxiety without letting it make every decision?
Emotional balance isn't the absence of emotion.
It's the presence of awareness.
This is why I love the breath. It doesn't ask us to ignore our emotions.
It invites us to meet them.
To notice them.
To soften around them.
To create just enough space... so that we can choose our next response instead of reacting automatically.
The next time you notice yourself becoming frustrated... pause.
Take one slow breath.
You may discover that one conscious breath changes far more than the situation ever could.
Because between every emotion... and every response...there is a breath.
And in that breath... there is freedom.
Before you continue your day, take a moment to ask yourself...
What has your inner weather been like lately?
☀️ Sunny
🌤 Calm
🌬 Windy
🌫 Foggy
⛈ Stormy
🌧 Heavy
Or perhaps... something else entirely.
Whatever your answer, welcome it.
Awareness is the first step toward change.
