What Gets Your Attention First?

How the first moments of your morning can shape the way you meet your day

Before the world gets your attention, come back to yourself

You open your eyes in the morning. What is one of the first things you do?

For many of us, almost without thinking, we reach for our phone.

We check the time. Then perhaps a message. An email. Instagram. The news.

And suddenly, before our feet have even touched the floor, our mind is already somewhere else.

Thinking about what someone said.

Comparing. Planning. Responding. Worrying. Consuming.

And we haven't even noticed our first conscious breath.

What receives your attention first?

I've been reflecting on this recently while listening to the teachings of Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi and his perspective on awareness and self-mastery.

It made me think about something very simple:

Who gets your attention first each morning?

You? Or the outside world?

The first few moments of the morning don't have to define your entire day. But they can influence the state from which you enter it.

If the first thing we consume creates urgency, comparison, frustration or worry, we may carry some of that feeling with us without even realising where it began.

Our attention has already been directed for us.

But what if we chose differently?

Before reaching outward, reach inward

Imagine waking tomorrow and, before touching your phone, simply pausing.

Notice your body. Notice how you feel. Notice your breath.

You don't need a 30-minute meditation. You don't even need to get out of bed.

Just give yourself a few moments before giving your attention to everybody else.

Take five slow breaths.

And ask:

How do I want to meet today?

Not:

What do I need to accomplish?

But:

How do I want to feel as I move through it?

Grounded? Present? Patient? Focused? Open?

Where attention goes, we begin to follow

This is where I find such a beautiful connection between everyday life, yoga and breathwork.

On the mat, we practice directing our attention again and again.

To the breath. To sensation. To what is happening right now.

The mind wanders.

We notice. And we return.

That simple act of returning is part of the practice.

And perhaps we can practice the same thing every morning.

Before the world tells us what deserves our attention, we can consciously decide where we want to place it.

Try this tomorrow morning

Before you reach for your phone:

Pause.

Take five slow breaths.

Notice the first thoughts moving through your mind without needing to follow them.

Then ask yourself:

What deserves my attention today?

Choose one intention. One small action. One direction.

And begin there.

Because perhaps the way we begin our morning isn't about creating the perfect routine.

It's about remembering that our attention belongs to us.

Before the notifications. Before the scrolling. Before everybody else's thoughts enter your mind.

Give yourself a moment.

Breathe first.

And then decide where you want your attention and your day to go.

I’d close the blog with something warm and connected to the message:

As you move into the weekend, perhaps give yourself a little less noise and a little more space.

Notice what receives your attention.
Come back to your breath.
Come back to what is here.

You don't need to fill every moment.

Sometimes the most beautiful way to begin again is simply to pause, breathe, and be.

Wishing you a beautiful and present weekend. 🤍

With Love
