The Power of the Breath & Yoga: A Gentle Path Back to Balance

It seems that now more than ever, we are searching for ways to reduce stress.
“Deep breathing” is often offered as a simple solution.

But what does that really mean? And does it truly work?

These are questions I’ve explored both through my own experience and through the teachings of breathwork, yoga, and nervous system awareness.

The Power of the Breath & Yoga: A Gentle Path Back to Balance

Understanding Stress in the Body

When we encounter stress whether it’s sudden or ongoing the body responds automatically.

The nervous system shifts into what we often call fight or flight.
Breathing becomes faster and more shallow.
The body prepares to react, protect, and hold.

This response is not wrong. It is intelligent and necessary.

But when stress becomes constant, subtle, chronic, always present, the body can remain in this activated state for longer than it’s meant to.

Over time, this may show up as:

  • tension in the body

  • difficulty relaxing

  • anxiety or irritability

  • fatigue or mental fog

The system simply hasn’t had the space to return to balance.

The Breath as a Bridge

The breath is one of the few ways we can gently influence the nervous system.

Through slow, soft, and conscious breathing, we begin to signal safety to the body.
This supports the shift from activation into regulation.

It’s not about forcing the breath to be “deep.”
It’s about allowing it to become steady, natural, and easeful.

When the breath softens, the body often follows.

A Simple Practice to Begin

You don’t need a perfect setting or long practice.

You can begin with something simple:

  • Inhale gently through the nose

  • Exhale slowly and completely

  • After the exhale, pause for a few seconds

  • Then allow the next inhale to arrive naturally

Continue for 5–10 minutes, without forcing or pushing.

Notice what changes.
Not to achieve anything just to observe.

Where Yoga Meets Breathwork

In Shala, this is the foundation of the work.

Yoga creates space in the body.
Breathwork creates space in the nervous system.

Movement prepares you to feel.
The breath allows what is held to shift, release, and integrate.

Together, they offer a more complete experience, one that supports not only flexibility or strength, but also regulation, awareness, and connection.

A Return, Not a Fix

This work is not about fixing yourself.

It’s about remembering.

Returning to the body.
Returning to the breath.
Returning to a state where you can feel safe enough to soften.

Again and again.

An Invitation

If you feel the need to slow down, to reconnect, or to create space within yourself,
you are warmly invited to explore this work.

My next breathwork experience, The Breath of Renewal, will be held on April 28.

A Gentle Reminder

There is no perfect way to breathe.
There is only your breath and your willingness to listen to it.

With Love
