Signs Your Body Is Stuck in Stress (And How Breath Can Help)

There’s a certain feeling many of us carry without even realising it…

A subtle tension in the body.
A mind that doesn’t fully switch off.
A sense of always being “on,” even when nothing urgent is happening.

For a long time, I thought this was just part of life.

But what I’ve come to understand through both my own journey and the work I share is that this is often the body living in a state of stress.

Not just mentally… but physically, deeply, within the nervous system.

A gentle reminder….you don’t have to carry it all.

Sometimes the first step is simply to pause and come back to your breath 🤍

🌿 What does it mean to be “stuck in stress”?

Our body is designed to respond to stress in very intelligent ways.

When something feels overwhelming or threatening, the nervous system activates a response often called the fight or flight state. This increases heart rate, sharpens focus, and prepares the body to react.

This response is not the problem.

The challenge is that for many of us, the body doesn’t fully come back down.

Instead, it stays slightly activated… holding tension, holding breath, holding patterns.

Over time, this can become our “normal.”

🌿 Signs your body might be holding stress

You might notice this as:

• shallow or restricted breathing
• tightness in the chest, shoulders, or jaw
• feeling restless, wired, or easily overwhelmed
• difficulty fully relaxing, even when resting
• emotional sensitivity or reactivity
• a constant sense of “doing” rather than being

These are not things to fix or judge.

They are simply signals from the body asking for attention.

🌿 Why the breath matters

One of the most powerful things I’ve learned is this:

The breath is not separate from how we feel.
It is directly connected to the nervous system.

The way we breathe sends signals to the brain.

Short, shallow breathing can reinforce a state of stress.
Slower, more conscious breathing can begin to signal safety.

This is why breathwork is used not only in wellness spaces, but also by athletes, first responders, and even military units to help regulate the body under pressure.

Because the breath is something we can access at any moment.

🌿 What happens when we begin to work with the breath

When we start to consciously work with the breath, something begins to shift.

At first, it might feel subtle.

A little more space in the body. A slightly deeper inhale. A moment where the mind softens.

Over time, the body starts to respond more deeply.

You may experience:

• a release of physical tension
• waves of warmth or energy moving through the body
• emotional release
• a sense of calm or clarity

These are natural responses.

Not something we force… but something we allow.

Because when the body begins to feel safe, it knows how to let go.

🌿 My approach to this work

The way I guide breathwork is always with the nervous system in mind.

It’s not about pushing or going as deep as possible.
It’s about building awareness, creating safety, and allowing the body to open at its own pace.

There is always choice.

You can soften the breath, pause, or return to a more gentle rhythm at any time.

This is where real change happens not through force, but through consistency and trust.

🌿 A simple place to begin

If you’re feeling the effects of stress, you don’t need to do anything complicated.

You can begin here:

Gently inhale through the nose for 4
Exhale slowly through the nose for 6

Repeat for a few minutes.

Let the breath be soft… unforced.

Notice what shifts.

Even small moments like this can begin to regulate the nervous system.

🌿 A gentle invitation
